WORKSHOP - LET'S CHAT - Beretta's DNA is its barrels

Beretta's Steelium barrels: 500 years of evolution in the service of ballistics

Since its origins in 1526 as a gun manufacturer, Beretta has built its reputation on absolute mastery of metallurgy and ballistics. Today, this expertise is embodied in a signature technology: Steelium, a true benchmark in the hunting and sporting rifle industry.

An exceptional metallurgical base

At the heart of Steelium technology lies a proprietary tri-alloy steel (nickel, chromium, molybdenum), designed to offer an optimal balance between mechanical strength, elasticity, and durability. This choice of steel allows for:

Excellent resistance to high pressures

High dimensional stability

Increased resistance to corrosion and wear

Each cannon is then subjected to a rigorous process including:

deep drilling

Cold forging by hammering (CHF)

vacuum de-stressing

These steps guarantee perfect concentricity between the chamber and the bore of the barrel, as well as internal homogeneity essential for accuracy.

Cold forging: the heart of performance

Cold Hammer Forging (CHF) is one of the most advanced processes in gunmaking. It involves compressing steel around a mandrel under extreme pressure, which:

densifies the metal structure, improves mechanical properties, and creates an extremely smooth internal surface.

Result :

. smoother ballistics,

a reduction in recoil and recovery,

. a denser and more uniform shot pattern, regardless of the ammunition (lead or steel).

An internal architecture designed for ballistics

Beyond the material, it is the internal geometry of the barrel that truly distinguishes Steelium.

🔹 Perfect Concentricity

Absolute alignment between the chamber and the tube ensures:

a perfectly centered projectile entry

uniform pressure

a stable trajectory from the outset

🔹 Progressive taper (forcing cone)

The connecting cone plays a key role:

It gradually guides the wadding and shot.

It limits their deformation, it improves the consistency of the sheaf. The longer this cone is, the smoother and more efficient the transition.

The Steelium range: a logical evolution of performance

Steelium (standard)

Double cone of approximately 80 mm

Maximum reliability while hunting

Consistent performance with all ammunition.

Steelium Plus

Triple cone reaching ~320 mm

More gradual transition

Improved shooting comfort and consistency

Versatility for hunting / sport shooting

Steelium Pro

Elongated cone up to ~450 mm

Maximum recoil reduction

More homogeneous and dense spray

Designed for competition shooting (e.g., DT11 platforms)

Steelium Pro X

Optimized cone (~430 mm) with advanced geometry

Three-dimensional study of the sheaf

Simultaneous improvement of:

terminal energy

managing the setback

the coherence of the lead cloud

The result: measurable ballistic performance that surpasses market standards. Measurable ballistics, not just perceived ballistics. Beretta took the analysis further with scientific testing:

reversing sensors (actual measurement on the shoulder)

3D analysis of the spray pattern using a high-speed camera, measurement of the energy transmitted to the target

These studies demonstrate that Steelium barrels, particularly the Pro X version, offer:

a higher terminal energy

a more coherent sheaf in time and space

improved shooting control

Conclusion

Steelium barrels are not simply a marketing ploy:

They represent a comprehensive approach to ballistics, where every detail from the steel to the internal geometry is optimized.

Concrete result on the ground:

. more consistent shots

. better on-target effectiveness

increased comfort

Consistent performance with all ammunition

Steelium is the meeting of Italian gunmaking tradition and modern engineering in service of a single objective: to hit true, with every shot.
